Trauma has reflected central issues of life throughout human history. But traumatology as a scientific discipline has only developed over the last century. Let’s look at some of milestones of this development. Traumatology is an aware and self-aware discipline, but it has blind spots and is constrained by external factors. Dealing with these matters should release traumatology to reach a new level.

On the occasion of my retirement from clinical work, I review my life and career through medicine, psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, traumatology and psychotherapy. Being a Holocaust survivor propelled my interest in traumatology and desire to heal traumas. I comment on the current state of traumatology and on my hopes for its future.
